On This Stopover Holiday
One of the must-sees in Libya of the Classical cities is Leptis Magna, which is easily visited from Tripoli. These packages have the added advantage of allowing you to explore the Libyan capital as well.
Tripoli
Tripoli is a city of two distinct sections, the Arab medina and the Italian Colonial-era new town. The Corniche stretches along the Mediterranean Sea, a lively and popular place on summer evenings. The medina remains a bustling place, with colourful and noisy souqs selling gold, copper and silks. It also has quieter areas with whitewashed mosques, traditional Arab houses and the Marcus Aurelius Arch, dating back to the Roman era. The new town, separated from the medina by Green Square, has interesting Italian-style buildings and colonnaded streets, and is home to a huge cathedral which was converted into a mosque just after Gadaffi's Revolution of 1969.
Leptis Magna
Leptis Magna has deservedly earned a reputation for having the most complete and impressive Roman ruins in the whole of North Africa. It was associated with the Roman Empire for more than 600 years from the 2nd century BC, and was significantly expanded with markets, theatres and forums during this period. These Roman structures, well preserved under sand for centuries, have made the city an important area for archaeological study since the 1920s.
